If you were carving the pumpkin into 45 degree angles, I'm guessing you were making the mouth of Cookie Monster because his eyes are round. The directions probably told you to carve the pumpkin into 45 degree angles for the tips of his mouth. In real life when carving a pumpkin, I don't think it matters whether or not you have specific knowledge of angles because the Internet has pictures anyway. But for other things, you have to know how a certain angle looks. ;)

We discussed this in class today and I found out that my train of thought was going in the wrong direction. You would probably need to cut at a 45 degree angle so the pumkin is smooth. Like Mehal said, cutting a pumpkin at a 90 degree angle would be pretty hard. I don't think it is essential to know how a 45 degree angle looks like because you can Google it. But it still take a general knowledge of the concept to carve a pumpkin at a 45 degree angle.

So you would probably need to cut at a 45 degree angle because it would be much easier to cut that way. If you were to cut at a 90 degree angle then it would probably take more energy, like we were cutting up. Kind of the same reason why you pull the rope of a pulley downward. My family and I usually go to a pumpkin patch with a really cheesy hayride and everything that I usually make them go on :). We usually buy those carving booklets and carve the pumpkin, but we don't really follow the rules. I guess it's just natural to do this . . . I mean, who ever cuts at a 90 degree angle? Even when I cook, I naturally tilt my knife at a 45 degree angle (accept for certain foods) . . . and I am a self taught cook . . .

The directions probably told you to cut at a 45 degree angle because the lid of the pumpkin needs a position to rest at. If you cut it at a 90 degree angle, the lid will fall into the pumpkin. I have carved a pumpkin in kindergarten. My teacher told us to cut at an angle, but at the time, I did not understand why. In the future, I would definitely use geometry knowledge to carve at a 45 degree angle so that the lid doesn't fall inside the pumpkin.

I agree with jigesha. The lid would fall inward if you didn't cut at an angle. It would be really hard to get if it fell. Also when you are cutting anything thing verticle, it is easier to cut because you are putting pressure on it compared to a 90 degree angle. I just made a pumpkin a few days ago. It has joker for a face. I plan on writing "why so serious" later.finally I think it is good to use common sense to figure out what is the best way to carve a pumpkin

i think the directions said to use 45 degree angle bc if you cut using 90 degree angles you are going to most likely cut squares and most jack-o-lantern faces i've seen don't have square eyes and noses.. yes ive carved a pumpkin yes i would use prior knowledge to cut it

The directions said to use a 45 degree angle while cutting, most probably for convenience and to make sure the lid does not fall while cutting. Lets assume you cut at a 90 degree angle. What will happen? A person would have to struggle to get a perfect round circle and there is a very good chance the lid will fall into the pumpkin. It is a various tedious task and try to take it out of the pumpkin. If the person cuts at a 45 degree angle the circle will be close to round if not perfect and will ensure the lid will not fall in. The lid will be on the knife or carving tool the entire time, and he or she can take it off with ease.

I personally have never cut a pumpkin, but I'm going to do one this weekend for the first time and I will use this knowledge when I carve my pumpkin.

Recently, I carved a pumpkin into the "Cookie Monster". The directions told me to use 45 degree angles. Why do you think that is? Have you ever carved a pumpkin? In the future, whether you have OR have not, would you ever consider using your knowledge.

The reason the instruction manual said to carve your pumpkin at a 45 degree angle is because when cutting thicker parts of the pumpkin, the 45 degree angle will give better leverage. I know this from my cooking and opening stuff. I have only carved a pumpkin once a long time ago.

I've never actually carved a pumpkin before, but I'm guessing it would be much more convenient to hold a knife at a 45 degree angle. Holding it at a 90 degree angle, I mean, that sounds uncomfortable. Wouldn't you have to bend you arm in like this twisted weird way? Also, I guess it would be easier to carve the pumpkin, and the cuts would be smoother... Yup that's about all I know about carving a pumpkin...

ok so i love halloween especially beacause i love to carve pumpkins, but i am super horrible at it (even if i print out a template online) and each year i go to shopright and buy this huge pumpkin but end up doing the same design...

The directions telling you how to carve a pumpkin into the “Cookie Monster” told you to use 45-degree angles, because when cutting out the top of the pumpkin, you have to place the knife at a 45-degree angle so that the lid will have a place to rest when you replace it. If you cut straight down, the lid will fall through. I carve pumpkins every year, and I usually make the mistake of not cutting out the top of the pumpkin at a 45-degree angle. So, the lid would usually ended up falling straight through. In the future, I will consider my knowledge of cutting the pumpkin using 45-degree angles so that the top of the pumpkin does not fall straight through it.

The directions told you to carve the pumpkin at a 45 degree angle because that makes it easier to carve. If you carve it at a 90 degree angle it makes it much harder to carve, however at a 45 degree angle you have more leverage while carving. I would carve it at a 45 degree angle because it just seems a more comfortable way to carve a pumpkin because if I carved it at a 90 degree angle I would have to move my arm in a weird way.

If the directions are telling you to carve a pumpkin with a 45 degree angle, you are probably carving a triangle. I have carved pumpkin before, and using my prior knowledge, some triangles have angles that are 45 degrees, and you can use these types of angles to carve a triangle.

Cookie Monster yay! I know I said stuff about Sesame Street considering Veggie Monster in class and although I was and will forever be staunchly against that idea, I am like wayy too tired to write that whole thing down. Plus carpal tunnel is supposed to be terrible. Therefore, typing = bad. Woah I'm doing proofs everywhere! Ah, I digress.

I think the reason for it is that a 45 degree angle would be the most convenient for the carver. Anyways, i never carved a pumpkin, i know, im lame, but in the future, i would just use an approximate angle instead of exactly 45 degree. So, in summation, I would use this knowledge if I were to ever carve one

There are many reasons you may need to use a 45 degree angle while carving a pumpkin. It probably would be easier to carve round edges because all you have to do is snap your wrist. It would be more convinient to use a 45 degree anlge mainly for the carvers comfort like almost everyone said. If I carve another pumpkin, I would use this information to make my life easier.

The directions told you to cut the pumpkin in a 45 degree angle because the eyes of the cookie monster are round. Using a 90 degree angle you could only get square eyes which would be unusual for a cookie monster pumpkin. No, I have never cut a pumpkin before but using this knowledge I will know how to if I ever do.

they tell you to cut using a 45 angle simply because when you cut it, you have the help of gravity, and it will be easier and more comfortable to cut. I have carved a pumpkin and i will use this to help in the future

The directions said to use 45 degree angles because then the top of the pumpkin will not fall into the pumpkin when the inside is hollow. Also, carving at an angle perpendicular to the ground would be very difficult, while carving at an angle parallel to the ground could pose a risk of cutting yourself. However, all of this is just a guess as I have never carved a pumpkin before. In the future, if I ever carve a pumpkin, I will use this information to help.

I believe that the directions asked that 45 degree angles be made because most of the features on a jack-o-lantern are jagged, and mostly resembles 45 degree angles. For example, the mouth on a traditional jack-o-lantern would normally be cut into several 45 degree angles. I have never carved a pumpkin myself but I've seen my mom make a couple. If I make one in the future I will probably use this knowledge to make a good jack-o-lantern.

I have never carved a pumpkin, but I would assume that if the knife was at a 45 degree angle, It would be easier to cut through the pumpkin because the weight of the hand and then blade of the knife would be working together.
